Who knew the changing of the guard would have to be so hard?
Guess there's certain stages no one can prepare you for
It's the saddest of days, what is there to say?
They've gone before your eyes into the unseen door

The sorrow steals your breath away, pulls the color from your face
But in these trying times it's time you take your place

Groomed for just this moment, you must know it's true
Someone just handed the reins to you

Looking up to them looking out for you each step of the way in every breakthrough
Always your constant guide
Warm beneath their wing you could face anything
And your proudest place to be was always by their side

They had a trip to take, a ticket time to meet
The journey of their lifetime, to finally fill their seat

But before they boarded there was one last thing they had to do
And someone just handed the reins to you

They say, "Everything is Everything" and that's supposed to be comforting
That anytime you look you'll see them everywhere
In the blossoming trees, in the sway of the breeze
But it isn't quite the same as seeing them standing there

No one's ever done it better, past or present, come or gone
The groundwork they laid down could never be improved upon

But this is just the highest hope they hoped someone might carry through
And someone just handed the reins to you

Destiny's grace holds firmly in place
There are miracles abound that only heaven knows
But still there's a choice in every voice
And it wasn't happenstance that it was you they chose

Their mind was sure and steady, they knew the time was right
They could tell your heart grown ready to take up and bear the light

And they carefully picked the person to leave the important task to
And someone just handed the reins to you

Amazing they were, him and her
And what they did for you is clear and plain to see
But wherever they've gone I know they passed it on
For the giant they were for you, you are the same for me

However did such a one as this in flesh and blood walk upon this earth?
Of pure heart and perfect love beyond measure of worth

How can we hope to manage, what ever will we do?
Someone just handed the reins to you
